Historically, a former government decided that all cars over 25 years old
qualified for a historic status and should not in future pay the 'Road Fund
Licence' fee.
This was modified by a following government, who 'froze' the date at a point
in time, 1973. This means that only cars built before 1973 will now
qualify for nil 'road tax' status.
The decisive date is that cars BUILT before 1 January 1973 qualify, and no
others. Thus, there were Stags built at the end of 1972, but that were
registered in early 1973, which will qualify for 'free' road tax.
To determine whether your Stag falls into this category, look at the
commission plate fitted to the rear of the passenger side door surround.
This was fitted to all Stags at the factory. The first piece of data is
the commission number in the format LD12345nn. Then
phone the TSR club office for the correct information on your Stag.
If your car falls into this category, you can obtain a
certificate from BL Heritage for a small fee, which certifies the date on which
your car was built and is essential to obtain a 'free' road tax disc from Post
Offices.
Please note that it is NOT sufficient to use your Stag
without any tax disc whatsoever, these are issued free by Post Offices if you
have the correct documentation.
